As you gain liberties by capturing, you can play on a point without liberties if it results in a capture. This can lead to a shape called ko. In some situations, players could immediately capture the stone that has just captured your stone, resulting in an endless stalemate. In these cases, the rule of ko states that you may not immediately capture a stone that has just been captured in ko until you have played somewhere else on the board first.
